The promise of the Holy Spirit is given to every one who believes in Jesus Christ.

John 7:37-39 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of  his belly shall flow rivers of living water.  (But  this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Spirit was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

Every One Who Believes in Jesus Should Know that God Has Promised You His Holy Spirit

The Promise of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament Prophets

Throughout the scriptures, prophets have told us God has promised men and women He would give them His Holy Spirit, also called the Holy Ghost.

Joel 2:28-29   And it shall come to pass  afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your  young men shall see visions:  And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days  will I pour out my  spirit.

Ezekiel 36:26-27
A new heart also will I give you,  and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.  And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.

The Promise of the Holy Spirit Given by John, the Baptist

When God sent John, the Baptist to Israel, he told the people that when the Messiah comes, he would baptize believers with God’s Holy Spirit.

Mat 3:11   I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to  bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit, and
with fire:

The Promise of the Holy Spirit Given by the Lord Jesus

When Jesus came, he preached to the people that God had promised the Holy Spirit to those who believe.  When Jesus spoke of the Holy Spirit, he called it the “Spiritual Water.”

John 3:5-8  Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he can not enter into the kingdom of  God.  That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

John 4:13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:  But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

In the Gospel according to Luke, Jesus made this statement.

Luke 9:9-13 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.  For  every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.  If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he  give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?  Or if he shall ask an  egg, will he  offer him a scorpion?   If ye then,  being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to  them that ask him?

The Promise of the Holy Spirit Given by the Apostles of Jesus Christ

The Apostle Peter on the day of Pentecost told the people God had promised the Holy Spirit to them that believe God raised n Jesus from the dead and made Jesus both Lord and Christ.

Acts 2:38-39 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.  For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

According to these words of the Apostle Peter, the promise of the Holy Spirit is to everyone that believes and asks God.  So, if you believe Jesus is the Son of God, the promise of the Holy Spirit is to you, and you should ask God for His gift.

The Apostle Paul reminded the brethren in Ephesus of their reception of the Spirit saying,

Eph 1:13-14  In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

What is the Holy Spirit?

The definition of the Holy Spirit is “God’s Spirit in a human person.”  Under the Law and the Prophets, the Spirit of God would move on a person, and that person might prophesy, have a vision or write the word of God in a scroll.  But that prophet was not born of the Spirit.  When Jesus came, died, and rose from the dead, he made those that believe in him, eligible to receive the Spirit into their heart to stay.  So, when a person believes on Jesus, they should expect to receive the Holy Spirit.  They should expect, that is have faith that the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses them from their sin, making them a clean temple in which God will come and dwell, not temporarily, but permanently.  God will put his Spirit in you and it will stay in you.

The Purpose for Which God Gives His Spirit to a Believer

The Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God in a person,
comes to lead and guide that person into ALL Truth.   It comes to comfort, counsel, and otherwise help the person who has received it.  The Spirit will give you the power to obey God and live a life pleasing to Him.  Best of all, the Spirit will raise you from the dead at the coming of the Lord Jesus.

John 16:13  Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth:

Rom 8:11  But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

What We All Must Do to Receive the Gift of the Holy Spirit

All we need to do in order to receive the Holy Spirit of God is:

1)  Believe God sent His Son Jesus in to world.

2) Believe Jesus was crucified, buried, and that God  raised him from the dead  to be the exalted Lord and Christ.

3)  Repent of our sins and be baptized in the name of God’s Son, Jesus Christ to wash our sins away.

4)  Ask God for His Spirit, in Jesus name.

What to Expect When We Receive the Holy Spirit

When we receive the Holy Spirit, we will know God has given it to us when we hear ourselves Speaking in Tongues, just as the people did in Acts of the Apostles.  Just as getting wet is a sign we have jumped into a lake or swimming pool,
Speaking in Tongues is the sign we have received the Holy Spirit.

Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Acts 10:44-46   While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all them which believed ...For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.

Acts 19:6  And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
